We have successfully moved our web server and associated services to a new host. We have decided to use a VPS (Virtual Private Server) and have been forced to go to the US for hosting due to the abhorrent pricing in Australia. Our VPS server in the "States" comes with 250GB of web traffic (up and down), 100MB internet connection, 1GB of RAM, 50GB of disk space, 2.8Ghz CPU and Windows 2008 for a fraction of the price I pay for a 1.5MB ADSL connection and 40GB of web traffic in Australia - without adding the cost of VPS hosting which in Australia would be over $100 a month for a similar setup.
We decided to go with Automated VPS due to their price and reputation, and have been very happy with the service so far.
The down side to hosting in the US is the latency. Network latency is the delay between requesting something from a server and getting a response, and the further the server is away from the requester, the longer the latency. We were hoping to host a demo SQL Server on our shiny new VPS, but the latency issue makes it very unresponsive. We are currently looking at other options for the demo server.
The old blog was in a different format to the one on this server (we are now using BlogEngine under IIS7), so posts will have to be moved manually. This means that comments will be lost also. Apologies for this! The new blog uses SQL Server at the back end so this won't happen again!
